The prop shaft runs in a pressurised grease system, as does the rudder shaft. The system is maintained by grease nipples in the sail locker, easily accessible when the locker lid is opened. The cartridge type grease gun is stored nearby. When the new engine was installed in 2004 the complete drive train was also replaced, including propeller and bearings, stern gland, and anti-vibration coupling. When the seal in the stern gland was replaced in 2014 the opportunity was taken to replace the rope cutter. We can testify to its efficiency in freeing us from a trailing lobster pot line. All components were taken apart and checked in the workshop.
