For making longer passages in the Norwegian Sea, North Sea and Biscay we felt that we needed a life raft. It is something that one is unlikely to ever use and there is therefore a temptation to go cheap. However, if you ever need it, there is little comfort in thinking about how much money was saved. We went top of the line with a Viking RescYou 6 person Type1 Group A Life Raft. Although we never used it, it was a great comfort knowing it was there when we were dismasted in the middle of a stormy night 200 miles from land.
It is fully enclosed and self righting, an important consideration in an emergency. We store it in front of the mast on the coach roof with a tether so that is automatically deploys when thrown overboard. There is a grab bag of supplies that is stored in the sail locker.
