The current engine was installed new in 2004 and the supports modified to suit. It is a Yanmar 3YM30 diesel i.e. 3 cylinders an a nominal 30hp. The cooling system is closed circuit which means that no sea water enters the engine block, just glycol-based coolant. Sea water passes through a heat exchanger ( serviced in 2015) which has ports for a future domestic hot water system. There is also no problem with priming after replacement of the high pressure fuel filter since it has a finger pump that clears any air back to the fuel tank. Also the oil filter, water pump and gear box dipstick are readily accessible, unlike some engines. New rubber engine mounts were installed in 2014.
The power was matched to the hull shape and weight to give optimum efficiency/performance balance and subsequent experience has shown that it was a good choice. It has proved reliable and got us out of many tricky situations. It always starts instantly. Running at 2,500 revs. it burns about 2 litres per hour and oil consumption is negligible (we never have to top up with oil just change it when it is dirty).
